In a move to bolster their backfield, the Carolina Panthers have added former first-round pick Rashaad Penny to their roster, reuniting him with head coach Dave Canales, under whom he flourished during their time together with the Seattle Seahawks.
The terms of Penny's contract with the Panthers were not disclosed, but his arrival adds depth to a backfield already featuring a mix of talent, including 2024 second-round pick Jonathon Brooks, Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders, and Raheem Blackshear. Brooks, recovering from ACL surgery, anticipates being cleared for training camp, but having additional options like Penny provides insurance during his recovery period.
Penny's familiarity with Canales' offensive system, known for its emphasis on the run and versatility, bodes well for his integration into the Panthers' offense. His most productive season came in 2021 under Canales' guidance with the Seahawks, where he amassed 749 yards and six touchdowns on 119 carries.
The addition of Penny also raises speculation about the future of Miles Sanders, who saw his starting role diminish last season. While general manager Dan Morgan envisions a significant role for Sanders, Penny's arrival offers the Panthers flexibility, potentially opening avenues for Sanders to be traded.
Despite a limited role with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, Penny brings experience and playmaking ability to Carolina's backfield. Drafted by the Seahawks in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Penny has accumulated 1,951 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns over six seasons, showcasing his potential impact for the Panthers moving forward.
