Reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Åberg from Sweden are set to lead the Bay Golf Club, representing California in the highly anticipated TGL presented by SoFi. This innovative golf league, spearheaded by legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, promises an exciting fusion of technology and sport.
Joining Clark and Åberg on the Bay Golf Club roster are esteemed players such as Ireland's Shane Lowry, winner of the 2019 Open Championship, and Australia's Min Woo Lee. The diverse lineup reflects the international flavor of the team, with players forming strong bonds both on and off the course.
"It's kind of cool having an international team," remarked Clark. "We all get along well. We've had dinner together, and I'm friends with Shane and Min Woo, and getting to know Ludvig better. I feel confident about our team, and it's going to be fun."
The inaugural season of TGL is eagerly anticipated, with the first tee-off scheduled for January 7, 2025, in prime time on ESPN and ESPN+. While initially slated to begin in January 2024, the league faced delays due to unforeseen circumstances, including a storm that damaged the venue at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Despite the setbacks, preparations are underway, with the league constructing a state-of-the-art 250,000-square-foot steel-supported structure.
"I feel more confident about the league," expressed Clark. "I think it was probably a good thing that there was a delay in starting, so they could make sure everything was right from the start. I'm excited and looking forward to seeing what it looks like. I think a lot of us players, there's some of the unknown, but what we do know is the people behind it are pretty powerful people."
The Bay Golf Club is owned by the Avenue Sports Fund, led by former Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry, with NBA stars Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Andre Iguodala serving as co-owners. Additionally, English footballer John Stones, Formula 1 driver Alex Albon, and Olympic surfers Leonardo Fioravanti and Kanoa Igarashi are among the esteemed minority owners.
With such a stellar lineup of players and the backing of influential figures, the Bay Golf Club and the TGL league are poised to revolutionize the world of golf, offering fans an exciting new way to experience the sport.
